Ontology of Digital Photography - A Comparative Study on the Theories of Reality of Charles S. Peirce and Gilles Deleuze

Kang, Mi-Jung

This paper aims to provide an ontological explanation of the reason why digital photographs are considered as indices from the Peircean point of view. The indexicality of digital photography is proven by virtue of more appropriate identification of the features of indices which is provided by Albert Atkin. Those features are significatory, independence, sigularity, indicatory, and phenomenological one. When it comes to showing that all kinds of digital photographs including composite ones are indices or sub-indices, the major questions are like these: first, are the photo and its object individual existence? second, are those in real
connection with each other? According to Peirce’s concept of reality based on Scholastic realism and Deleuze’s concept of virtuality derived from Bergson’s philosophical thought, all kinds of digital photos are proved as indices by showing that photos and their objects are real individuals and they have real connection to their objects. In conclusion, ontological status of virtual reality produced by digital composite photos is same with or superior to actuality.
