A Comparative Study of <Yeongnam‐hyoyeolbu‐jeon> and <Hyeop‐hyobu‐jeon>

Jung, In-Hyouk

Seo, Gyoengchang(1758∼?)'s <Yeongnam-hyoyeolbu-jeon> and Yi, Ok(1760∼1815)'s <Hyeop-hyobu-jeon> are based on the same story. But there is difference with the Yeolbu of Yeongnam and the Hyobu of mountain valley. The purpose of this theses is at that point. What did caused this difference? And what does that means of the difference?
In this paper, I looked the communicative relationship between the narator-naratee and the character-character as addresser-addressee. The Yeolbu of Yeongnam is superior to the tiger in their relationship. Their communication is one-sided and similar to a monologue. Because the narrator of <Yeongnam-hyoyeolbu-jeon> paid attention to the theme of the fidelity and the filial duty rather than the relationship of Yelbu with the tiger.
The character of <Yeongnam-hyoyeolbu-jeon> is only 'ideal type' and is a effective tool to implement the topics of the text. The narrator of <Yeongnam-hyoyeolbu-jeon> emphasizes the topic once again in the comment. <Yeongnam-hyoyeolbu-jeon> is so called the 'Readerly text'.

In contrast, Hyobu of <Hyeop-hyobu-jeon> and the tiger understand each other in the mutually supportive relationship. There is a dialogical communication between them. On the other side of the characters' attitudes are described in detail. Because the narrator pay attention to the relationship of character who practices an abstract value rather than the fidelity itself.
In the comment, narrator of <Hyeop-hyobu-jeon> describe a new story of another woman who is inconsistent with the Hyobu in the body of <Hyeop-hyobu-jeon>. It means that <Hyeop-hyobu-jeon> is the 'Writerly text'.
The narrator of <Hyeop-hyobu-jeon> is interseted in the theme of the fidelity or the filial duty too. But as well as, it should be noted in the text that is a 'real' practitioner.
