A Study on Mythic Icon of Cheonjeon‐ri Rock Art by Semiotic Analysis

Ju, Hyun-Shik

Rock art means the native rock that has a artificial mark on the surface. Rock art is taken center stage as prehistoric ages' archive, because it has many iconic representations, various visual signs. So, recently, it is treated as an object of interdisciplinary study beyond an archaeological approach.

But a hard question on rock art study is that rock art was produced from the distant past. In other words, for the improbability of its context analysis, the systemic description of rock art is very difficult. The problems of a direct approach to the cultural convention results from the researchers' ignorance about rock art's contextual factor. Now the rock art's substantive, physical factors, namely, etic factors, can be identified, but structural constituents, cultural codes, that is, emic factors cann't be identified. This is obstacle of rock art study. Therefore, an absolute truthful methodology of rock art study doesn't exist.

As a result, research direction of rock art study must get out of the representative perspective that rock art's sign simply mirrors prehistoric ages's conditions. the representative perspective poses several problems, especially, it overlooks rock art's textuality. So rock art study will be more productive, when researcher begins the study that focuses on semantics, functions of rock art's sign morphology, expand into the study that concentrates on the interaction between rock art's signs and contextual factor such as its natural environment, prehistoric material conditions. That is, rock art is intentional product with the rules that special images are made, disposed. This paper's differentiated point proceeds from this semiotic analysis of rock art. A major premise of this paper is that the perception of natural reality is made up of dialogue between the artificial signs and the natural material conditions. This perspective compensates the earlier studies that have superficially speculated on environmental factors of rock art's remain.

An object of this paper is Cheonjeon-ri rock art found in 1970. Cheonjeon-ri rock art is Korea's very first prehistoric rock art. Because it has many geometric figures, the definite interpretation about Cheonjeon-ri rock art is very difficult. As a result, semiotic analysis that regards textual systemic description as important is urgently needed for scientific approach to Cheonjeon-ri rock art,
